Stripp, Meisberger, Meehan Excel at Berkshire County Invitational
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- There were no team scores at Wednesday's Berkshire County Invitational track and field meet.
But the most exciting finish of the day was in a team event.
The boys 4-by-800 meter relay, a 3200-meter battle that came down to the last few centimeters, was decided when Mount Greylock's Carter Stripp overcame a 12-second deficit in the final 400 meters and outleaned Hoosac Valley's Coby Tarjick at the finish line at Williams College's Lee Track.
"When I went into the race, I didn't expect I was going to catch him," the Mount Greylock anchor said. "But coming around the [third turn] on the first lap, some of my teammates were yelling, 'You can get him! You're gaining on him!'
"So right when I got to there, I was like, 'Alright, I've got to push it really hard and see what I can do.' "
What he did was help the Mounties finish in 8 minutes, 44.3 seconds, edging Hoosac Valley by a mere two-tenths of a second.
Stripp said he was not sure he could complete the comeback until the moment of truth.
"Not until the last five meters," he said. "He put on a nice surge right here [in the final 30 meters]. And I just pumped my arms as fast as I could and came up with the win."
The host Mounties had a number of wins to show for the day in their first action of the season.
But no individual had a better day than Lenox's Shannon Meisberger.
She won the 100 hurdles, 400 hurdles and high jump and placed second in the long jump on the way to being named the outstanding female performer of the meet.
Not too shabby for an athlete who wondered whether she would have any success this early in the season as she recovers from a quadricep tendinitis that cropped up midway through the Nordic ski season.
"I was almost positive I was not going to win any of my events," Meisberger said. "It's nice to know that I still have it and I'm not completely out of it."
Meisberger's Lenox teammates were in it in nearly every event on the track on Wedndesday.
The Millionaires racked up wins in the 100 meters and 200 meters (Amber Shove), 1600 (Emma Jourdain), 800 (Maggie Sorrentino) and 3200 (Nicole Gamberoni).
Sorrentino was also second in the 400 to Mount Greylock's Maddie Albert.
In the field, Wahconah's Maddie Sprague doubled in the long jump and triple jump. Mount Greylock's Jackie VanSlycke won the shot put and placed second in the discus to Taconic's Allyssa Doerle. Monument's Paige Gray took home top honors in the javelin.
The outstanding performer on the boys side on Wednesday was Drury sophomore Connor Meehan.
Meehan won the triple jump, was second in the mile and the long jump and finished third in the 800.
Other highlights from the boys meet included: Hoosac Valley's Dante Sandifer (first in the long jump, third in the 100 and part of a winning 4-by-100 quartet); Hoosac's Trevor Ciempa (first in 800 and high jump and third in 3,200); and Wahconah's Matt Lighten (first in the 100, third in the 400).
For all the athletes in attendance, the real highlight of the day was the chance to test themselves against the competiton they will be seeing the rest of the spring.
"For me, my biggest competitor is [Wahconah's] Gianna [Moncecchi], and it's nice to know where she is and where I am compared to her," Meisberger said. "And I know I need to still work hard because she's going to work just as hard to beat me."
