Meczywor Leads Hurricanes Past Lee

But once the rain and wind intensified, the Hurricanes took control.
Emma Meczywor scored seven goals and set up five more to lead Hoosac Valley to a 15-7 win.
Early on, it was anyone’s game
When Lee’s Naima Clark scored in the third minute of the second quarter, the Wildcats had a 4-3 lead.
But Meczywor converted an assist from Jacinta Felix to spark a 5-0 run as the weather went from bad to brutal. And the Hurricanes opened the second half with a 5-0 run to take a 13-5 lead.
“We did not come to play today,” Hoosac Valley coach Molly West said. “We’ve had a week and a half off. We haven’t played a game. We were rusty. Lots of practice, but it’s kind of hard to figure out what you need to work on without a game.
“To be honest with you, I thought Peyton [Choquette] did a really great job of picking up our energy, collectively. I thought that was pretty awesome.”
After Meczywor’s game-tying goal, she set up Ashlyn Lesure (five goals, two assists), who scored to give Hoosac Valley the lead for good.
Meczywor scored two more and Maryn Cappiello found the back of the net again to open an 8-4 lead.
Lee’s Clark scored her second of the game with about two minutes left in the half to end the run and get the Wildcats within three goals.
“I thought our captains did a good job at half-time,” West said. “I basically said, ‘You guys have got to take over. We control our attitude and effort.’ I didn’t think we had it in the first half. But in the third quarter, Jacinta [Felix], Ashlyn and Emma did a great job of taking over and getting the little things done.”
Lesure converted a free position opportunity to start the second half. Five minutes later, Felix (one goal, three assists} capped a 5-0 run with a score to make it 13-5.
Cami Lovato and Kennedy Whitley split time in Hoosac Valley’s goal, combining for eight saves.
Reese Duschesne stopped nine shots for Lee, which got a hat trick from Ashley Sonsini and a pair of goals from Netti Boyko.
The Wildcats (0-4) are at home on Thursday to take on Pope Francis.
Hoosac Valley (3-0) will host McCann Tech on Thursday.
The Hurricanes will be looking to keep their record perfect and continue their assault on the school’s record book. Meczywor kicked off the season by breaking Hoosac Valley’s all time points mark at Chicopee back on April 3. Lesure has a chance to finish second on that list, and Felix is honing in on 300 career points.
“Also proud - as a mom and coach - for Emma breaking the school point record held by Ali Mendel set in 2019,Emma not only surpassed that 389 mark last game, but the 400 mark as well today (245 goals on the career as of today); she sits at 406 points,” West said. “Emma was my sidekick on the sideline watching the 2019 team and getting to see Ali, Brooke [DiGennaro], Paige [Barrow], Claudia [Bresett], Chloe [Martel], Faith [Hall] and Cairagan [Greene] strengthen the overall program and establish us as a successful program.
“Emma works extremely hard to not only be an instrumental player but a great leader and teammate as well. It gives me great joy to have a front row view of her last season as a Hurricane and set her own legacy.”
