Think summer, Tanglewood — not Taylor

Legendary musician James Taylor, a perennial favorite at the Tanglewood Music Center in Lenox, will not be making an appearance this year, but the Boston Symphony Orchestra and an array of talent are sure to make the season memorable.
LENOX — Like old friends renewing a summer romance, ideal setting and song will meet once again on the grounds of Tanglewood Music Center when the weather grows warm. The Boston Symphony Orchestra last week released the 2004 season schedule, featuring a diverse mix of special musical events, celebrations and traditional favorites. The orchestra’s legendary former conductor Seiji Ozawa will return after a two-year absence. John Williams will mark his 25th year of association with the orchestra. Wynton Marsalis, Yo-Yo Ma, Prairie Home Companion’s Garrison Keillor and a host of others will make appearances, and the eclectic Tanglewood Jazz Festival will close the season in September. Alas, though, fans of James Taylor will not get their Tanglewood fix this season, as the folk-rock stalwart is not on the schedule. Music lovers will have the opportunity to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Ozawa Hall — featuring a gala concert led by Ozawa himself, returning for the first time as a visiting conductor — and to experience a range of artists, guest conductors and special performances. “We wanted to present as strong a season as we possibly could,” said Anthony Fogg, artistic administrator for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, “one that would appeal to a very wide-ranging audience. The BSO’s season will open on July 9 in dramatic fashion, with a performance of Wynton Marsalis’‚ “All Rise,” featuring Marsalis, the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and vocal soloists. The work was given its premier by the BSO last fall at Symphony Hall in Boston. “It’s a very striking original piece,” Fogg said. Another highlight will be an Aug. 7 performance of Tan Dun’s “The Map,” with Yo-Yo Ma as a soloist. The multimedia work was written specifically for Ma and incorporates filmed field recordings portraying the musical life of several Chinese ethnic minorities, reflecting on the composer’s own roots. In showcasing “All Rise” and “The Map,” the organization will present some of Symphony Hall’s most recent and intriguing works in the striking Tanglewood setting. “We wanted to include a couple of these projects that we’ve done over the last couple of years — of which we’re particularly proud,” Fogg said. Prior to the BSO opener, Tanglewood will host concerts, beginning on July 1 and 2, when the Mark Morris Dance Group will return to collaborate with the music center for the second straight season. And one of the season’s most intriguing events will celebrate a concert venue, as well as the musicians and composers who have performed there. The Seiji Ozawa Hall 10th anniversary gala, slated for Aug. 1, will include a special program of three works by composers closely linked to Tanglewood. Former Boston Pops conductor John Williams will open the program, leading the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra in a performance of Leonard Bernstein’s “Benediction,” a piece that was performed at the first concert at Ozawa Hall. Ozawa, who resigned as BSO music director two years ago, will continue the program with Toru Takemitsu’s “Ceremonial, An Autumn Ode,” featuring Mayumi Miyata as soloist. According to Fogg, it promises to be a fitting tribute to both Ozawa and the concert hall named in his honor — a venue that has had a profound impact on the orchestra and Tanglewood. Over the last ten years, Fogg noted, Ozawa Hall has hosted some of the most outstanding musical performers in the world. “It's now one of the most sought after venues for performers,” Fogg said. “Acoustically, it's a marvel but aesthetically, there's something magical about the place.” Tanglewood will host several guest conductors from around the world, including former New York Philharmonic Music Director Kurt Masur, who will appear on opening night and again on July 16. Other visiting conductors will include Christoph von Dohnanyi, Charles Dutoit, Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos and Emmanuel Krivine. This year’s “Film Night at Tanglewood” on August 14 — a mix of movies and music that has become one of the center’s most popular annual draws — will feature a tribute to the late actress Audrey Hepburn and composers Bernard Hermann and Henry Mancini. Williams, former Boston Pops director and renowned film composer, will direct the program. Its centerpiece will be a performance of “Moon River” from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” with synched film footage of Hepburn singing the song. Williams led his first Boston Pops concerts at Tanglewood in 1979 and succeeded Author Fiedler as Pops director the following year. In honor of Williams’ 25 year association with the BSO, Ozawa Hall will host Aug. 8 and 9 performances of his seldom-heard 1964 arrangement of Lerner and Loewe's “My Fair Lady” for jazz orchestra and singers, as part of a special jazz evening. Several fans have noticed the absence from the schedule of James Taylor, famous folk and pop singer, who owns a home in the Berkshires, but Fogg pointed out that Taylor’s appearances are not necessarily annual events. Two years ago, Taylor served as a narrator for a Boston Pops performance, and then he and his band played an extended set on their own (while some Pops performers enjoyed a seat on stage). That show drew Tanglewood’s largest crowd ever and caused a massive traffic snarl in downtown Lenox. Last season, Taylor performed to a crowd of nearly 20,000 on a steamy summer night. Fogg said that the BSO “has a great relationship with James Taylor” and may bring him back to Tanglewood in the future. He added that he did not believe Taylor was currently booking shows for the upcoming summer because he is traveling abroad. “We hope to have him back soon but it won't be this season,” he said. Brochures, programs and information on how to order tickets will be available in March by calling 617-638-9467. Other season highlights are as follows: • Tanglewood on Parade, the annual daylong celebration, Aug. 3: Boston Pops Conductor Keith Lockhart, Laureate Conductor John Williams and conductor Christoph von Dohnányi will lead the evening's Koussevitzky Music Shed concert with the Boston Symphony, the Boston Pops and Tanglewood orchestras, in a program to include Strauss' “Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks” Robert Russell Bennett's “Four Portraits,” "Immigration" and "Civil Rights," and "Flight" from Williams' “American Journey,” as well as a new version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" arranged by Williams (it was performed for the first time on New Year's Day at the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif.) The concert will close with the traditional performance of Tchaikovsky's “1812 Overture,” featuring cannon fire and a fireworks display over the Stockbridge Bowl afterward. • Second Annual Tanglewood Wine & Food Classic, Saturday, Aug. 7, noon to 5 p.m. Taste premium wines from over 100 vintners, including wines from the leading producing regions of the world. Breads, smoked meats and other specialty foods by renowned chefs from the Berkshires, Boston and New York. Governor Healey Signs Breast Cancer Screening Bill

BOSTON — Today, Governor Maura Healey signed An Act Relative to Medically Necessary Breast Screenings and Exams for Equity and Early Detection.

This comprehensive legislation will ensure that patients have access to follow-up breast cancer screenings and exams, while also preventing any increase in patient cost-sharing by 2026.

"We know that early detection of breast cancer saves lives. This legislation will help ensure that cost is not a barrier for women to get the screenings and care they need," said Governor Healey. "I'm grateful to the Legislature for their leadership on this bill, and to the patients, providers and advocates who made their voices heard in support of more affordable and accessible care for Massachusetts residents."

This legislation would, starting in 2026, require insurers to cover diagnostic exams for breast cancer, digital breast tomosynthesis screening, and medically necessary and appropriate screening with breast MRIs and ultrasounds. This legislation would also prevent any increase in patient cost-sharing, thus removing cost barriers for patients who need more rigorous screenings due to dense breast tissue or abnormalities seen in their initial preventive screening mammograms.
