Martin Clutch for Mounties in Tourney Upset
SALEM, Mass. – Judge Martin scored his only points of the game at the perfect time.
Martin sank a pair of free throws with 1.7 seconds on the clock Friday to give the Mount Greylock boys basketball team a 57-56 win over Salem Academy Charter School in the Division 5 State Tournament.
The hosts called timeout to draw up an inbounds play, but Mount Greylock senior Jackson Shelsy leapt up and tipped the pass to break up the play and end the game.
Seamus Barnes scored 22 points, and Chase Doyle added 14 to lead Mount Greylock’s offense.
The Mounties won the first three quarters by one point apiece in a tight ballgame from start to finish. Salem Academy was able to cut into a three-point deficit and take a late lead.
But Martin, a starter all season and strong post presence for the Mounties, got to the line and sealed the deal.
Max McAlister and Shelsy each scored eight.
Mount Greylock (16-6) has won 10 of its last 11 games.
The 22nd-seeded Mounties move on to face No. 6 Westport on Monday in the Sweet 16. Westport (14-7) advanced on Thursday with a 63-57 win over Ayer-Shirley.
