Meczywor Makes Big Impact in Win Over Wahconah
DALTON, Mass. -- The Hoosac Valley softball team seems to be making all the right moves so far this season. On Wednesday, it was senior captain Amanda Meczywor who came up with all the right moves at just the right time to lead the Hurricanes to a 7-3 win over previously undefeated Wahconah, improving Hoosac's record to a perfect 5-0 in the process.
The Warriors got to Meczywor early, scoring single runs in both the first and second innings. Wahconah would only cross the plate one more time the rest of the way, however, as Meczywor held the hosts to one earned run on four hits, finishing with five strikeouts and just one walk.
Down 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning, Meczywor got some help from her teammates when junior Tanelle Ciempa hit a bases-loaded double to tie the game at two runs apiece. Senior captain Karli Schrade then scored from third base on a passed ball to give the Hurricanes' a 3-2 lead.
Hoosac kept the ball rolling in the fifth inning, blowing the game open with four runs to open a 7-2 lead. Meczywor came through with a two-run triple after Tori Rumbolt and Sabrina Sommer each reached base on singles. Schrade then knocked Meczywor and herself home by blasting a two-run homer. Wahconah scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough on a day when Meczywor was on top of her game.
"Out bats came alive in the fourth inning," Hurricanes head coach Morgan Shafer said. "After that, Amanda kept them at bay with her stellar pitching and some good defense behind her. She really was a leader out there, hitting her spots, talking to her teammates and keeping hitters guessing."
Meczywor and Schrade each finished with two hits and two runs batted in, while Sommer also contributed two hits and two runs scored on the day.
Hoosac plays again on Thursday, with a road game against Mount Greylock at 4 p.m.
