Hinkell's Blast Bumps Drury Past Greylock
WILLIAMSTOWN -- Kendra Hinkell's two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Drury softball team to a 6-1 win over Mount Greylock on Monday afternoon. The Mounties (2-4) had tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning before Lyndsey DeGrenier got things going for the Blue Devils (4-2) with a single in the top of the sixth. Hinkell then came up and belted a blast over the left-center field fence for her second home run of the season. Hinkell finished the day going 3 for 5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Drury put the game away by scoring three more times in the top of the seventh frame. Senior catcher Kait Moresi (2 for 4) started things off with a single before DeGrenier walked and Hinkell reached on a bloop single. Sophomore Amanda Ramsdell scored one run by hitting into a fielder's choice before two more runs came home courtesy of a Greylock error.
"It was a much closer game than the final score would indicate," Blue Devils head coach Mary Ann Maroni said. "It was questionable whether we could get the game in because of the conditions surrounding the pitching mound and home plate, but after some valiant work by [Mounties head] Coach [June] Blake and members of the baseball team, the field was made playable."
The Devils outhit Greylock 7-4 in the game, with both teams making two errors apiece. Junior Catie Benoit got three of the Mounties four hits, smacking a double to go along with two singles. DeGrenier (one earned run, four strikeouts, two walks) started the game and pitched four innings before giving way to freshman Cat Record, who faced just 10 batters over the final three frames to pick up her third win of the season.
Sophomore Alexis Bushika took the loss for the Mounties, allowing four earned runs on eight hits, striking out four and walking three batters.
Drury next plays at St. Joe's at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
