Lowe Throws Shutout as Eagles Advance in State Tourney
SHEFFIELD, Mass. – The Mount Everett offense built a picket fence, and Matt Lowe shut the gate as the Eagles advanced to the Division 5 State Tournament’s Round of 32 with a 4-0 win over Springfield International Charter School on Friday.
Lowe, a freshman, struck out 11, walked none and scattered five hits in a complete-game shutout.
“Matt was in control the whole game,” Mount Everett coach Dan Lanoue said. “His only trouble came in the top of the third. With the bases loaded, he got [SICS’s] Rob Scoville to ground to first to get out of the inning.
“Then in the fourth for Springfield, a leadoff bunt single followed by an error put runners on first and second. The next batter grounded into a 6-3 double play, and then Matt struck out the last batter to end the inning with a runner on third.”
Lowe helped his cause by going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Mount Everett’s offense gave him all the run support he needed with a run in the bottom of the second, and it added single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
The down side was that the Eagles left 10 runners on base, missing some chances to put the game out of reach.
“Scoville pitched a great game and had some great defensive plays to keep the game close,” Lanoue said. “In the sixth inning, with two out and the bases loaded, Hunter DeGrenier hit a fly ball to right field. The right fielder made a great shoestring catch to save at least three runs.”
Mount Everett (14-7) travels to play 13th-seeded Sutton on Monday for a spot in the Sweet 16.
