Mount Greylock Gets Convincing Win in Sweet 16
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Mount Greylock senior Olivia Cook closed out her career in the Mountie Dome in style, putting down a kill for the final point of a three-set win over Innovation Academy in the Division 5 State Tournament Round of 16.
“Seniors Rubi Hernandez Soriano and Emily Alvarez participated in the play defensively, while senior Kylie Sweren set the play,” Mount Greylock coach Greg Geyer said.
“The Mounties have a 33-match winning streak at home that these seniors leave to their teammates to continue next season.”
Another senior, Kelsey MacHaffie, served 14 aces and put down eight kills in the 25-16, 25-13, 25-18 win that sends Mount Greylock back to the state quarter-finals.
Sweren had six kills and a pair of aces. Alvarez pulled up 23 digs and served an ace.
Ninth-grader Annabelle Coody had a team-high 10 kills and served three aces.
Mount Greylock, which started the state tournament last week as the No. 4 seed, started Wednesday’s match as the No. 5 seed after the MIAA was forced to recalculate the standings.
That means instead of hosting in the quarter-finals, the Mounties (19-3) have to go on the road to face Baystate Academy on a date to be announced.
