Calvert, De Jong Named Athletes of the Week
One of this week's iBerkshires.com/Southwestern Vermont Health Care Athletes of the Week helped his team get far as any soccer team in Berkshire County. The other helped her cross country team go as far as a team can go in Massachusetts high school sports.
Brody Calvert was as dangerous a scorer as you could find in the county this fall, and he continued to demonstrate his nose for the net right into Wahconah's state tournament run.
In the Round of 32, Calvert scored the game-winning goal in the 76th minute.
Four days later, he made the play that led to the winning goal with just 1 minute, 18 seconds remaining in regulation.
Calvert also scored two goals of his own in that 4-3 win to send Wahconah to the Division 4 State Quarter-Finals.
On Sunday, Hampshire knocked off Wahconah to go to the Final Four.
The Mount Greylock girls cross country team is one of seven Berkshire County teams gearing up for the State Championships on Saturday in Wrentham.
While ninth-grader Vera de Jong wasn't at the front of the pack for the Mounties at Saturday's state-qualifying meet in Westfield, that is only because it was a very competitive pack.
Four of Mount Greylock's runners finished in the top 12 in a 125-runner field at Stanley Park. De Jong covered the 3.1-mile course in 21 minutes, 34 seconds for a time and a finish (19th) that would have led a lot of squads in the 16-team Division 3C field.
Her recognition here is a testament to her ability and her team's ability to fill in the gaps, even on a day when it was missing one of its senior stars.
"We were missing Josie [Smith] today, but we have such a deep team," said Katherine Swann, who placed second at Saturday's sectional. "That we're still able to win really shows that depth. It's just great to see."
