Wahconah's Robb, Hoosac Valley's Meczywor Earn Weekly Honors
This week’s iBerkshires.com/Southwestern Vermont Health Care Athletes of the Week are big reasons their teams are playing in this week’s Western Massachusetts Championship Games.
Hoosac Valley’s Emma Meczywor is the leading scorer on the school’s girls lacrosse team with 72 goals this season, and she is second on the team in points with 124 in 15 games – 8.3 points per game for a team that takes a 12-4 record into Wednesday’s regional final.
Meczywor scored seven goals in a 17-16 win over Hampshire Regional in Friday’s Western Mass semi-final. And she helped set up teammate Ashlyn Lesure’s game-winning goal in the final minute of play.
Big games are nothing new to Meczywor, who, in the winter, played for the Hurricanes in three straight state championship basketball games, culminating in March’s Division 5 title win over West Boylston.
Meczywor averaged 11 points per game for Hoosac Valley this winter, pumping in 22 points in the Western Mass Class D title game.
She and her Hoosac Valley teammates will attempt to win the school’s first Western Mass lacrosse title on Wednesday when they take on the winner of Monday’s semi-final between Lee and South Hadley.
Wahconah’s baseball team already knows who it will be playing in Tuesday’s Western Mass final in a tournament that has turned into the Central County Invitational.
Wahconah will face top-seeded Pittsfield at Wahconah Park in Pittsfield for the regional title after beating No. 2 Taconic in Thursday’s semi-finals.
Colby Robb was nearly untouchable in that one.
He retired the side in order in the first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
In the seventh, Eddie Ferris broke up the no-hit bid with a one-out single, and Christian Salzarulo doubled to put runners at the corners. But Robb got the next two hitters on a fly ball and a line drive to end a 2-0 win.
It nearly was Robb’s second no-hitter of the spring.
On May 4, he went the distance without allowing a hit in Wahconah’s 5-1 win over Hampshire Regional.
Pitching largely to contact, Robb has a 4-2 record and a 2.20 earned run average this spring.
At the plate, he is hitting .296 and leads Wahconah in walks with 17.
On Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., Wahconah will go for its Western Mass title against Pittsfield, a 14-2 winner when the teams met on May 10 in Dalton.
