Hoosac Girls Rout Sci-Tech
Midway through the second quarter, Hoosac's Kailynne Frederick went to the line for a two-shot foul, and Hoosac coach Ron Wojcik called his other four players back over halfcourt for some coaching while she shot.
All alone at her end of the floor except for three Sci-Tech players on the lane, Frederick missed her first shot, missed her second shot and then grabbed the rebound.
One on three.
Even when outnumbered, the Hurricanes were too much for the Cybercats, running away with a 73-20 victory in the first round of the Hoosac Valley Holiday Tournament.
Hoosac (4-0) will face Wahconah on Saturday evening in the championshp game of the tourney.
Sci-Tech faces South Hadley, which dropped a 44-29 decision to Wahconah in Friday's opener.
"I give Sci-Tech a lot of credit," Wojcik said. "It's a coach trying to build a program. He wants to play up competition-wise.
"We hosted this tournament last year, and we invited everyone who played to come back, and Sci-Tech wanted to. ... They're a little down, but I respect what he's trying to do in trying to build a program."
Fallon Field scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds off the bench for Hoosac, which also got 14 points and seven steals from starter Emily Rosse.
Lauren O'Neil scored five points to lead Sci-Tech, which opened the second half with a 6-2 run but scored just one point over the next 15 minutes.
Every Hoosac player contributed to the offensive effort. Besides Field and Rosse, Megan Rodowicz finished in double figures with 11 points, and Frederick had seven rebounds and two assists to go with four points.
It was a good night to display Hoosac's depth. The starters played limited time before yielding each quarter to a platoon of five reserves.
"We have some young kids there getting some experience, which has been great," Wojcik said. "They play yard. They go against teach other every day in practice. Whether we go first five/second five or we mix the units, we have confidence in everyone on the team."
Wojcik knows the Hurricanes will need that depth down the road, perhaps as soon as Saturday night.
"Now we've got to come back and play a Wahconah team we played last week that's got two nice wins since we played them," Wojcik said. "They look much improved from even the first game against us."
