Big Run Allows PHS to Blow Past Hoosac
PITTSFIELD, Mass — It's official. the Hoosac Valley girls' basketball team has hit the tough part of its schedule this season. The Hurricanes went up against the top three teams in Berkshire County in the past eight days and lost their third straight game on Tuesday night, suffering a 71-42 defeat at Pittsfield. After putting in a solid effort in a close loss to undefeated Lee on Thursday night, Ron Wojcik's squad appeared to be battling the Generals well until the wheels fell off in the second quarter.
Down just 14-12 midway through the quarter, Pittsfield (11-3) reeled off a 20-0 run to earn a insurmountable 41-19 lead at halftime. The Generals lit the scoreboard up for 28 points in the second quarter alone and never scored less than 13 points in the three other frames.
"During Pittsfield's 20-0 run, they shot 9 of 9 from the floor during that stretch," Wojcik said. "It was a combination of good shooting and poor defense by us. We need to recognize the fact that we can not afford defensive lapses like that against good teams and expect to come back. We need to get tougher, and I was disappointed with our defensive efforts."
Sophomore reserve Dominique Satrape proved to be a big weapon off of the bench for the Generals, scoring a game-high 21 points with six assists and eight steals. The hosts also received 13 points from junior Courtney McLaughlin, while senior Jill Ritrosky chipped in with 12 points and six boards.
Freshman forward Emily Rosse scored 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Hoosac (9-5), which will try to snap its three-game losing streak when its hosts Monument Mountain at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
Pittsfield is now off until Tuesday, when it plays at Monument at 7 p.m.
