Team Effort Helps Hornets Take Down St. Joe's
PITTSFIELD, Mass — Just a few hours after seeing its playoff dreams evaporate, the McCann Tech girls' basketball team responded with a hard-fought 38-36 win over Saint Joseph's in the first game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Showcase held at Pittsfield High School.The Hornets (8-11) jumped on the Crusaders early, taking a 12-3 lead after the first quarter of play. McCann carried an 18-11 lead into halftime and seemed to be in firm control of the contest when it outscored St. Joe's 13-8 in the third quarter. Despite carrying a 12-point lead into the fourth quarter, the Hornets had to fend off a furious rally by the Crusaders to hold on for a two-point win.
Kendall Smith led all scorers with a 23 points for St. Joe's. McCann had a much more balanced scoring attack with seven different players making the box score. Senior guard Ashley Alibozek scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Hornets, while junior Mary Nguyen had a solid overall game with eight points, 11 boards and five assists.
McCann closes out the season with a game at Cathedral at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
