The Drury girls' basketball team was recognized with the Team Sportsmanship Award at DCU on Saturday.

WORCESTER, Mass.  — The Drury girls' basketball team thought its season was over when it lost to rival Hoosac Valley in the Division 2 Western Mass. final last Saturday. The Blue Devils had one more bus ride to take, however, after learning that they had been selected as the winners of the 2013 MIAA Girls DIvision 2 Basketball Team Sportsmanship Award.

Drury was nominated for the award by athletic director Molly Meczywor. John Franzoni's squad then traveled down to Worcester on Saturday to accept the award during halftime of the Division 2 state championship game between Medfield and Nashoba. Medfield won the state title with a 54-36 victory.

'I am very proud of the girls on my team for being role models, both on and off the court, and for representing our school and community with class and pride," Franzoni said. "It is a tremendous honor for our team to receive this prestigious award and a testament to the excellent leadership provided by our captains [Shannon Garvey, Morgan Lamarre, Danielle Racette, and Ali Tatro]."

Saturday's festivities capped off a banner year for the Blue Devils, who went 17-4 overall, earned the top seed in the Division 2 Western Mass. tournament for the first time in the program's history and won two playoff games before falling to the Hurricanes in the sectional final.
