Drury Drubs Monument for Fifth Straight Win
GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass — An early afternoon game ended earlier than expected, as the defense of the Drury girls' basketball team totally shut down Monument Mountain in a 41-18 road win on Saturday. The Blue Devils (11-2) picked up their fifth straight win by allowing their second lowest point total to an opponent this season. The Spartans (2-13) competed well with the visitors in the first and third quarters, but managed just two points apiece in the second and final frames.
Junior forward Shannon Garvey was the only player in double figures, leading the way for Drury with a game-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds. Classmate Danielle Racette chipped in with five points and nine assists for the Devils, who had eight different players break into the scoring column on the day.
"It was a great defensive effort from our entire team to earn the win at Monument.," Drury head coach John Franzoni said. "Shannon was tremendous on both ends of the court, and Danielle played a solid overall game. We did a great job to defend and limit Monument to one shot. Monument scored on their first two possessions to take a 4-2 lead, but our defense then held them to two baskets for the rest of the first half to take a 23-8 halftime lead."
After two big wins over a pair of South County opponents on the road last week, the Blue Devils now prepare to take on North Division rivals Wahconah and Lee next week. Drury starts a series of tough games with a home matchup against the Warriors at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
