Monument Boys Get First Victory of Season
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The Monument Mountain boys basketball team defeated St. Joseph, 72-46, on Wednesday in the consolation game of the Gene Wein Tournament at Drury High School.
The Spartans got a quick lead on St. Joe early in the first quarter, running the score up 15-2 within the first three minutes. Their press limited St. Joe’s shooting opportunities, making it difficult for them to create any offense at all.
Late in the second quarter, Monument was in foul trouble, sending St. Joe to line, but the Crusaders couldn’t finish at the line, giving the Spartans a 41-20 lead going into the half.
Monument came out strong in the second half, taking quality shots and hitting them.
“They played with more emotion tonight, last night we lacked effort on both sides of the court,” Monument coach Mike Saporito said. “Today we talked about the importance of emotion and building it on the court and I think that helps in all facets of the game.”
Tonight’s win marks the first for Monument Mountain (1-3). It will travel to Pittsfield on Monday evening to face the Generals who are currently 2-0.
“It’s a win for us and our first, so it’s big in that regard,” Saporito said. “But it’s time to get back to work tomorrow and prep for the next game against Pittsfield, which we know is a very tough opponent.”
