Taconic Boys Top Wahconah for Fourth Straight
PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Izaiya Mestre led three Taconic players in double figures in a 68-48 win over Wahconah on Monday night.
Mestre scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half, and Taconic broke open the game with an 11-0 run to start the fourth quarter as it won its fourth straight.
Treyvon Ringgold scored 14 and grabbed six rebounds, and Deonte Sandifer scored 13 in the win as Taconic used its full court pressure to keep the visitors off balance most of the night.
"That's who we are," Taconic coach Bill Heaphy said. "That's how we've been playing all year. That's how we have to play. We feel like if we can put pressure on people, we can use our depth."
Early pressure allowed Taconic (5-1) to jump out to a 10-0 lead. Mestre scored six in the initial spurt, including twice in transition.
Wahconah (3-4) its scoring drought midway through the quarter when Cole Morrison scored in the post to start his game-high 18-point scoring night.
But the lead pretty much stayed in the 10-point range the rest of the first half, which ended on a steal and score by Sandifer that send Taconic to the locker room with a 33-22 advantage.
Wahconah scored the first three points of the third quarter to get within eight, but Brett Murphy scored in the post, and Sandifer and Ringgold scored in the paint on back-to-back trips to push the lead back to 13 moments later.
Ringgold scored 10 of his 14 in the second half as Taconic established more of a post presence.
It was 48-38 through three quarters before Taconic drove the final nail in the coffin with the 11-0 spurt to open the fourth.
Anthony Whiteley got it started by setting up Abdiel Cotto for a triple. Then Matt Stracuzzi scored in transition before Ringgold scored on consecutive possessions -- first making one shot at the line and then getting a conventional three-point play to make it 58-38.
Kyle Reardon finished the run wih a foul shot to establish a 21-point lead before both coaches started clearing their benches.
Wahconah will look to snap a two-game losing streak when it heads to Pittsfield on Wednesday.
Taconic travels to Lenox on Thursday.
