Commerce Pulls Away from Wahconah in Second Half
DALTON , Mass. — After a powerful second half by Commerce, Wahconah dropped to (0-2) on Monday with a 72-59.
Early in the game Wahconah held a solid lead going into half up, 35-32.
This lead was accomplished on the strength of captain Sam McLaughlin’s 10 first half points and Aidan Hagmaier’s 12.
As for Commerce, Savinghan Watkins led his team with nine rebounds in the first half to go with his 12 points in the first half.
Commerce had struggles the entire game with foul trouble, recording nine in the first half and six in the second half.
Meanwhile, Wahconah was foul free, only picking up four on the night.
Both teams’ fans were energized going into the second half.
But on the floor, Commerce grabbed the momentum, outscoring the hosts, 19-9 in the third quarter to take a 53-44 lead going into the final quarter of the game.
McLaughlin gave his best efforts for his team to try and chip away at the lead, scoring 2 3’s for his team in the fourth quarter accounting for 6 points.
With fewer than three minutes remaining in the game Commerce led 70-58.
In the tense final moments of the game neither team could find momentum, missing a number of wide open shots in the paint.
Commerce's Brandon Smith was a defensive threat in the fourth quarter, stealing three balls off throw-ins.
Wahconah (0-2) now will face-off on the road against Chicopee Comp (1-2) on Thursday.
