HV Stumbles in Second Half against Greenfield
GREENFIELD, Mass. -- After showing some positive signs in its last loss, a two-point defeat to Monument Mountain, the Hoosac Valley boys' basketball team took a step back on Tuesday, struggling in the second half on its way to a 54-38 loss to Greenfield. The Hurricanes trailed just 22-21 at halftime, but failed to score more than nine points in either of the last two quarters. The Green Wave, meanwhile, took control of the game by outscoring the visitors 32-17 in the second half. Elijah Marchese and Lew Borden each scored 15 points for Greenfield, while Vincent Funari chipped in with nine more.
"We competed in the first half, but we could get anything going in the second half," Hoosac head coach Bill Robinson said. "We missed many easy baskets in the paint and around the basket. Midway in the third period our defense broke down a few times and left them with uncontested baskets."
Sophomore guard Matt Braman led the way for the 'Canes, scoring a game-high 16 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists. Classmate Trevor Alibozek added 10 points and 12 boards for Hoosac, which is still searching for its first win five games into the season.
"We did cut down on our turnovers, although 17 for the game still wasn't good enough," Robinson said. "We just seem to go through long periods of time where we can't make a basket. We scored single digits in both the third and fourth quarters tonight, and that will lead to trouble any night. Not sure what the answer is with this group, but we'll continue to work at it and hopefully see some improvement on a daily basis."
The Hurricanes next host undefeated Mount Greylock at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
