The Hurricanes are on to the semi-finals in both the girls and boys Central/Western Massachusetts tournaments, and this week’s iBerkshires.com/Bedard Bros. Auto Athletes of the Week helped get them there.
Freshman Nathan Haley and senior Abi Disbrow each had a big week as their respective teams won a pair in the tourney -- each going on the road to upend a higher seed in the quarter-finals.
Hoosac Valley’s girls needed every one of Disbrow’s five saves in an 8-7 win over Wahconah in their playoff opener. In the quarters, she had 12 saves in a 12-9 win over Nipmuc to send the sixth-seeded Hurricanes to the section’s Final Four.
On the season, Disbrow has backstopped Hoosac Valley to a 15-3 record, allowing 109 goals while making 102 stops for a solid .483 save percentage.
No one has been able to stop Hoosac Valley’s Haley in the post-season -- certainly not since half-time of the Hurricanes’ playoff opener.
In the last 72 minutes of game time, Haley has scored 12 goals -- an eight-goal-per-game pace.
His six-goal second half against Lee in the first round helped Hoosac Valley break open a tight contest.
Two nights later, he poured in six more to lead the Hurricanes to a 10-3 upset win over Mount Greylock. That gave Hoosac two wins in three tries this year against the traditional Berkshire County powerhouse and sent the ‘Canes to the sectional semi-finals for the first time in that program’s history.
Hoosac Valley’s boys made their first post-season appearance just two years ago. On Tuesday, they will travel to take on Central Mass power Nipmuc for a berth in the sectional final.
Hoosac’s girls, who made their first playoff appearance just last year, go to Mount Greylock on Tuesday to take on the Mounties in the semis.
