Blue Devils bounce back in win over Wahconah
NORTH ADAMS -- An effective game plan against Wahconah\'s tightly-packed zone defense helped the Drury boys\' basketball team to an efficient 50-36 win in the consolation round of the Gene Wein Holiday Tournament on Friday night.Unlike Thursday\'s loss to Pittsfield, the Blue Devils (2-1) were the aggressors out of the gate, jumping out to a 15-5 lead after the first quarter. Drury point guard Cody Wemette played a solid game overall, scoring two points to go along with six rebounds and five assists. His play on offense allowed Jack Racette\'s team to turn the ball over just 16 times against the Warriors\' tough zone defense, while his work on defense made it tough on John Lavinio, who had to work hard for his game-high 16 points.
For the third straight game, the Blue Devils were led by senior forward Tyler Benoit, who posted 15 points and nine rebounds on the night. Sophomores Nolan Bird and Alex Bush also played pivotal roles, however, as each of them chipped in with 11 points on the night. Bird knocked down 3 triples on the night, while also grabbing five boards and three assists.
"I thought the key to the game was the inspired play of our sophomore starters Nolan Bird and Alex Bush," Drury head coach Jack Racette said. "They keep continuing to improve, and I also thought our two captains, Wemette and Benoit, showed great offensive leadership tonight. Wemette also came up big with the defense he played against Lavino."
The Blue Devils play at Mount Greylock next with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday night.
