Greylock Earns Season Sweep Over Pittsfield
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — It's official, the hottest softball team in Berkshire County now resides in Williamstown. The Mount Greylock softball team proved that on Monday, earning its fifth win in six games with a 5-3 home victory over Pittsfield. The Mounties (14-5) swept the season series with the Generals (15-3), who were easily the County's best squad throughout the majority of the year.
Greylock showed they belonged in the same class as Pittsfield, however, rallying from a 3-0 deficit by scoring five runs combined in both the fourth and fifth innings. Aoife Nester gave the visitors the lead in the top of the first with a two-run single. She later added another RBI in the third, driving in Jamie McKeever with a two-out base hit after McKeever led off the frame with a triple.
Generals' starter Sarah Rayner kept the Mounties quite until the bottom of the fourth, when Greylock's bats got going with four consecutive hits in a row. A double by senior Caitie Benoit and back-to-back singles by Meredith Dezieck and Alyssa Magiardi loaded the bases before freshman Miranda Voller came through with a three-run double to even up the game at three runs apiece. The Mounties then went ahead one inning later, using a walk by Heather Tomkowicz and an RBI triple by Sierra Holland to take the lead. Holland would later score on Dezieck's third single of the game, giving Greylock a two-run cushion with two innings left to play.
"We got the big hits when we needed them," Mounties head coach June Blake said. "I was happy with the way we battled back in this one. We made some great plays defensively to keep PHS off the board in the sixth inning. They were threatening with runners on second and third with no outs, and we were able to retire the next three batters."
Tomkowicz was able to outduel Rayner for the second time this season, allowing two earned runs on nine hits to improve her overall record to 14-5 this year. Tomkowicz struck out nine and walked two batters, while Rayner fanned 10 with three base on balls.
