Bazonski, Everett Squeak By Greylock
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — It's hard to find a better stat line than the one Mount Greylock pitcher Heather Tomkowicz put up on Monday. Unfortunately for Tomkowicz, that stat line was across the field playing for the opposition.Alicia Bazonski outdueled Tomkowicz by the slimmest margins on Monday, allowing three hits with 11 strikeouts and only one walk to lead the Mount Everett softball team to a 2-1 win on the road. Bazonski won the pitchers' duel between two of Berkshire County's best by giving up just three singles and overcoming a 1-0 deficit after the first inning.
Greylock (9-4) got on the board in the first inning courtesy of an RBI single by sophomore Meredith Dezieck. The hosts loaded the bases with one out thanks to a base hit by senior Michaela DiNicola, an error and a walk. Dezieck then fought off an inside pitch by Bazonski and hit a little floater right in front of home plate. She beat the throw to first base, allowing DiNicola to score and give the Mounties the lead.
With Tomkowicz dealing from the circle, that lead held up until the top of the fourth, when the Eagles scored a pair of runs on three singles and an error. Just like Dezieck's hit, Everett used a soft infield single to score the go-ahead run. That was the only blemish on Tomkowicz's record all day, but it cost her the win. Other than that inning, the sophomore hurler allowed just three singles on the day. She struck out eight batters without allowing a single walk as her record dropped to 9-4 this year.
Despite a couple of bad breaks in the fourth, Tomkowicz came back very strong, allowing just one hit and retiring the final nine Eagles' hitters to end the game.
Haley Finn was the game's leading hitter, collecting three hits for the Everett offense.
Greylock returns to action with a road game at Lee at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
