Holland's Homer Carries Mounties To Win
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Mount Greylock softball team inched one step closer to a berth in the Division 2 Western Mass. tournament on Friday, shutting out Monument Mountain in a game shortened to just five innings because of the mercy rule. The Mounties received a near-perfect performance from sophomore pitcher Heather Tomkowicz, who allowed just one hit and two walks to improve her team's record to 9-3 this season. Tomkowicz fanned nine batters and received a great effort from her defense, which only made one error in the field all game long.
With Tomkowicz on her game in the circle, the Greylock offense went to work by scoring five runs in the second inning to open up a 6-0 lead. Senior Sierra Holland slammed a solo home run in the second frame, while junior Anna Penna added an RBI double. Tomkowicz also had a good day with the bat, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Senior Caitie Benoit chipped in with two hits and one RBI as well, while sophomore Markell Shea added a two-run triple.
Aspen Sawyer took the loss for the Spartans, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits and seven walks. She did have Monument's lone hit off of Tomkowicz, however.
The Mounties return to action on Monday with a home game against Mount Everett at 4 p.m.
