McCann Softball Qualifies for Tourney
WARE, Mass. -- Olivia Esoldi went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Haley Malloy struck out eight to lead the McCann Tech softball team to a dramatic, 4-2, win over Ware on Wednesday.
The win gave the Hornets a record of 10-8 and punched their ticket to next week's Western Massachusetts tournment.
"It was such an exciting game," McCann coach Kate Galli said. "McCann's players gave it everything they had. Everyone stepped up, from the senior captains to the newest JV addition at first base today.
"We wanted it more. We have overcome so many challenges this season, and I'm just so proud of the way they became a team today. I saw it happen before my eyes. They had the fire in their bellies, and winning was the only option.
"It was a team on a mission today, no exceptions."
Malloy scattered five hits and shut the door after Ware scored twice to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
"Haley Malloy was a pitcher with a mission, and she loves the challenges that have been thrown her way," Galli said. "She was in command today. She looked confident.
"Not only did she keep the Ware batters off balance, but she stepped up at the plate as well."
Malloy went 2-for-3 at the plate, and Kayla Martin doubled. Jess Sun went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
McCann's defense committed just one error behind Malloy.
The Hornets host Sabis on Thursday and travel to Mount Everett on Friday.
