NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Senior starter Katlyn Haring got a rare day off from the pitching circle for the McCann Tech softball team on Tuesday. Her absence left the door open for junior Erika Ziemba, who in her first start of the season pitched a complete-game two-hitter to lead the Hornets to a 12-0 win over Lenox.

Ziemba stuck out nine batters and didn't allow a single walk, while the McCann defense made only one error on its way to improving its season record to 4-1. The Hornets' offense pounded out 12 hits on the day, led by senior Amanda Cariddi's 3 for 4 effort at the plate. Classmate Bryana Malloy also came through with two triples and three RBI, while junior Ashley Alibozek went 2 for 2 with a home run and two runs scored.

"I thought we swung the bats well today," McCann head coach Robin Finnegan said. "We still have a few kids in a slump and once they break out, I think we will score more runs. I am very pleased with Bryana because I see power from her this year. She basically has been a bunter and singles hitter, but in the first few games this season she has shown she does have power."

Overall, Finnegan was able to get 13 different players onto the field on Tuesday, with eight of them getting at least one hit.

"It was a good game to give Kate a rest and see what Erika had to offer," Finnegan said. "I was able to get everyone in the game and get some kids some playing time."

The Hornets will next face their biggest test of the season so far with an 11 a.m. game at Monson on Thursday.
