Ziemba Tosses Shutout In Win Over Lenox
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — It's been quite some time since Erika Ziemba and the McCann Tech softball team enjoyed the taste of victory. That being said, the Hornets' 9-0 home win over Lenox must have tasted pretty sweet.Senior Erika Ziemba played a huge role in McCann's ability to snap its 10-game losing streak. The senior starter picked up her first shutout win of the year, striking out eight and walking just one to lead the Hornets to their first victory since a win at Smith Academy back on April 10. Ziemba allowed just three hits on the day, and the McCann defense backed her up by making just one error in the field.
"We finally walked away with the W," Hornets head coach Robin Finnegan said. "It has been a rough year as far as our win/loss record, but I wouldn't trade this team in for anything."
McCann (2-12) took control of the contest by belting out three extra-base hits and scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Ziemba, who led the Hornets' offense by going 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs, and junior Sarah Norman each had RBI doubles in the first inning, while Alex Lincoln drove in another run with a triple.
Norman finished with two doubles and one RBI, while senior Brittany Briggs came through with two hits, one RBI and two runs scored. Makayla White allowed four earned runs and eight walks while striking out five to take the loss for the Millionaires.
McCann next hosts Smith Academy at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
