Devils Shake Off Slow Start, Rally to Beat Patriots
BENNINGTON, Vt. -- Down 4-2 after the first two innings, Cat Record and the Drury softball team settled in and then pulled away from host Mount Anthony, claming their first victory of the 2011 season with a 13-6 win on Thursday.Record, a freshman pitcher making her first career start, gave up four runs through the first two innings, but responded with four scoreless frames after that. While Record was getting her groove on, the Blue Devils offense also found its rhythm, scoring 11 runs over the same four-inning span. Record ended up allowing two earned runs on nine hits, striking out six batters and walking two for her first victory with the team.
"She was a little nervous at first, but she showed a great deal of composure after the third inning," Drury head coach Mary Ann Maroni said. "After a slow start and having to come from behind, I thought our team displayed a lot of character in coming back, taking the lead and beating a very scrappy Mount Anthony team."
After hitting the first-ever home run over the outfield fence at Alcombright Field on Monday, senior Kendra Hinkell continued her powerful play at the plate by going 2 for 4 with a double, four RBI and three runs scored. Junior Lyndsey DeGrenier also had a solid day with the bat, going 3 for 4 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored.
Senior Kelsey Ouimet also had two of Drury's 12 hits on the day, while sophomore Amanda Ramsdell added a triple and two runs batted in.
The Blue Devils are on the road again on Friday for a 4:30 p.m. game at Monument Mountain.
