Drury blindsided by Brattleboro in Blowout Loss
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Freshman starter Cat Record was forced to leave the game early for the Drury softball team, which was blindsided by Brattleboro 14-0 on Monday in a the Blue Devils' most lopsided defeat of the year.Record had to be taken out in the third inning when a line drive hit her just below the knee. Drury (12-6) was already trailing 4-0 at the time and could never really slow down a Colonels' club that scored two runs apiece in the first four frames of the game to open up an 8-0 lead.
Starter Kayla Wood did the rest for Brattleboro, picking up the win in the circle by throwing a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits and striking out eight batters on the day.
"Brattleboro was an extremely improved team from last year and by far the best team we have played this year," Blue Devils head coach Mary Ann Maroni said. "Their defensive skill, hustle on the bases and hard hits did us in today."
After Record, who Maroni hopes will be available for a postseason run, left the game in the third, fellow freshman Jordan Vanuni came in and did a solid job in relief. Maroni said she "somewhat befuddled them with her slow, low pitches for a couple of innings before they adjusted to her pitches in the seventh inning to score five runs."
The Colonels exploded for 13 hits in the game, led by Ariel Kane, who collected a double and a triple. Kait Moresi, Lyndsey DeGrenier and Jessica Sunn each had hits for Drury, which next plays at Wahconah at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
