Drury Softball Tops Mount Greylock for First Win
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The Drury softball team earned its first win of the season Tuesday afternoon against Mount Greylock on Francis Millard Field.
"From Day One these girls have had a great attitude and worked hard," Drury coach Chad DeGrenier said. "We're much better than we played in the first two games and today showed that; they were pretty solid on defense and offense."
The Blue Devils had the whole package; offensively and defensively, but it was sophomore shortstop, Allie Brassard who really delivered for her team in the 3-2 victory.
In the top of the fifth, the Mounties were down one run and the Devils had two outs when Greylock senior Miranda Voller hit a line drive up the middle of second and third base, but Brassard made a diving catch to record the third out and send Drury back to the plate.
The Mounties kept the score at 3-2 after the bottom of the fifth. Drury left one runner on base to close out the inning.
In the top of the sixth Greylock came out and was able to record a few hits, but the Devils threw the runners out on the play holding their 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the sixth with two outs Brassard hit one to deep to center field, making her way to third, but Jenna Moulton was thrown out the next play for the third out of the inning.
"She's [Brassard] only a sophomore and she's the anchor of the infield," Degrenier said. "Some days I put her at third, some days I put her at short depending on who we're playing and what I think they're going to do, but she's definitely our anchor out there and her hitting is going to come, she got that big triple too."
Drury closed it out in the top of the seventh with a 1-2-3 inning to seal its first victory, two of the outs coming off of plays Brassard.
Greylock's two runs came from Voller and pitcher Fiona Kelly who recorded three strike outs.
For Drury, senior Cat Marceau scored two runs and junior Jenevieve Gavazzi scored the other. Sophomore pitcher Maya Howland struck out five Tuesday afternoon.
