Drury Downs Mohawk To Snap Losing Streak
SHELBURNE FALLS, Mass. — The Drury softball team had its fair share of good bounces in a 9-1 start to the season. The Blue Devils also had some tough breaks go the other way in a recent four-game losing streak. On Friday, however, sophomore pitcher Cat Record made sure to keep a firm grip on the outcome of Drury's 5-1 road win over Mohawk.Record stepped up in a big way, helping the Blue Devils (10-5) break a four-game skid by allowing just one earned run in a complete-game effort. She allowed just three hits, struck out 10 batters and walked only two to improve her record to 10-5 this year.
"Although this was not an exciting game, there were several positives," Drury head coach Mary Ann Maroni said. "Cat was lethal on the mound, striking out 10 with very few balls out of the strike zone. Mohawk positioned their outfield well to record eight putouts. We were hitting the ball well, but it was always to someone.'
With Record on top of her game, the Blue Devils' offense didn't need much on Friday. Junior Katie Hancock started things off with an RBI single in the top of the first inning before the visitors broke the game open with a three-run second frame. After a pair of walks put runners on board, Record scored one run with a two-out single before a Warriors' error allowed two more runs to score.
Mohawk got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, but Drury responded with a pair of doubles by seniors Lyndsey DeGrenier and Danielle Cardinal in the top of the seventh. Cardinal drove in DeGrenier for her 12th RBI of the season.
Maykayla Poissant took the loss for Mohawk, allowing four earned runs on four hits. Drury will try to stay on track when it hosts North Division rival Mount Greylock at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
