Mounties Spoil Hoosac Girls Lacrosse Opener
CHESHIRE, Mass. -- Nearly a month into what was supposed to be the start of the spring season, the Hoosac Valley girls lacrosse team played its season opener, and it ran into a buzz saw in the form of Mount Greylock, which reeled off a 20-6 win.
Thirteen different players scored for the Mounties, including their starting goalie, Sam MacWhinnie, who had a goal and an assist after going into the field in the second half.
Emma Polumbo scored five times to lead Mount Greylock (7-1), which opened its season back on April 3.
"Today was our first game, and there were plenty of times where that showed," Hoosac Valley coach Molly Meczywor said. "However, given the fact we start one seventh-grader, four eighth-graders and several new players to the game, I was happy with our play during points of the game.
"Holly Cadren did a great job controlling play for us, and newcomer Megan Richardson was instrumental on the defensive end.
"Mount Greylock is a fast team who passes quickly and finds the open girl very well. A great game to build off of."
Cadren scored three goals for the Hurricanes, who got two from Aubrey Rumbolt and one from Ella Suters. Monica Vallieres made six saves for the Hurricanes.
Sarah Stripp had a hat trick, and Arianna Walden scored a goal and had three assists for Mount Greylock, which got two saves apiece from MacWhinnie and Lucy Barrett.
Mount Greylock hosts Lee on Wednesday as Hoosac travels to face Wahconah.
