Mount Greylock Boys Lax Opens Strong Against Pittsfield

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Mount Greylock boys lacrosse team defeated Pittsfield Monday afternoon in its home opener, 17-2.

 

Senior attack Michael McCormack opened the scoring less that a minute into the game with the first of his six goals.

 

Greylock's attack was strong all day, beating Pittsfield in the midfield. They got a lot of great shots on net, a few of which were denied by some stellar saves from Pittsfield goalie Nikolai Pixley.

 

But the Mounties continued to fire away and held an 9-0 lead at the end of the first half with goals from Thomas Astle, Sean McCormack, Jonah Kelley, three from Liam Chenail, and two more from Michael McCormack.

 

"I was pleasantly surprised at how we looked, considering it was our first game," Greylock coach Brandon Asplundh said.

 

The Mounties came out in the second half and picked up right where they left off; their ninth goal came with five seconds remaining in the first half and their 10th goal came with 10 seconds passing in the third quarter, tallying goal number four for Michael McCormack.

 

And the Mounties just kept on rolling, with three goals from Cole Hughes, two more from Michael McCormack, and one from Chenail. They held a 16-0 lead going into the final twelve minutes.

 

Freshman Cole Seaman replaced junior Cal Filson in goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter for the Mounties. Filson finished the game with six saves.

 

Pittsfield netted its first of two goals with a minute gone in the fourth. It came from Mitch Stechmann; less than a minute later Greylock responded with a goal from Chenail.

 

The Generals put in another with seven minutes remaining in the game to put the score at 17-2, where is would remain for the final.

 

"We used the second half to try some different things that we have been working on," Asplundh said. "We're trying to put in a lot of things, but we have only been able to play against each other, so it was very helpful to have a good team here to try some different offenses and defenses."

 

Asplundh feels that the Mounties still have some improving to do before game two despite the 17-2 win and said the goal is to be great by the end of the season.

 

"We have an awful lot that we can clean up everywhere on the field," he said.

 

Greylock will travel to Lee  Wednesday afternoon to take on the Wildcats, who defeated Hoosac on Monday afternoon 9-5.
