Gregory Limits Mounties in Win for Braves
PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- After closing out the season by winning six out of its last seven games, the Mount Greylock baseball team will now have to enter the playoffs coming off of a loss. That's because the Mounties were limited by Taconic stater Peter Gregory, who struck out nine and walked just one in a complete-game performance that lifted the Braves to a 5-3 win over Greylock on Friday afternoon. Gregory allowed nine hits, including a staggering five doubles, but the Mounties (11-9) could only manage three runs off him by scoring one in the top of the fourth and two more in the fifth.
Taconic (15-5) jumped on Greylock starter Andrew Leitch early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a double by Luke Toomey and an RBI single by Corey Decker. Toomey later added a solo home run in the sixth inning for the Braves, who were leading just 4-3 at the time. Leitch gave up five earned runs on seven hits through four innings of work to take the loss. He struck out two and walked one batter before handing the ball over to Ben Coleman, who allowed just Toomey's homer over the final two frames.
Junior Billy Pulasky led the Mounties offense by going 3 for 3 with two doubles and a run scored. Leitch also had a nice day at the plate, batting 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and one run scored.
On Tuesday, Steve Messina's club found out that it had been seeded ninth out of 11 teams in the upcoming Division 2 Western Massachusetts Baseball Tournament. Greylock drew No. 8 Southwick (12-8) in the first round, with the winner of that game taking on No. 1 Monument Mountain (15-5) in the quarterfinals on Monday. The Mounties first must get past the Rams in a game at Southwick at 4 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.
The two squads have yet to face each other this year, so it might take them a few innings to get to know one another. In addition to Greylock and Monument, Berkshire County also has three other teams in the Div. 2 draw. Drury (13-7) is No. 2 in the bracket, followed by No. 3 Wahconah (13-7) and No. 7 Hoosac Valley (12-8).
