Mounties Get Needed Win over Amherst

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Emery Rotter broke an 8-8 tie with a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the sixth, and the Mount Greylock baseball team Monday went on to an 11-8 win over Amherst-Pelham.

 

The Mounties mounted a three-run, one-out rally to pull ahead for good after scoring six times in the bottom of the fifth to erase a 5-2 deficit.

 

“Coming in we knew we had to win this game and that we were going to need a team win,” Mount Greylock coach Rick Paris said. “This Amherst team was definitely not the team we saw the first time where they were missing players on vacation.”

 

The Hurricanes battled back after falling behind, 8-5, in the fifth to tie the game in the top of the sixth.

 

“A pivotal point in the game was the top of the sixth where one of our seniors struggled a bit and walked three and gave up one hit and three runs and with bases loaded and only one out,” Paris said. “On a mound visit to take out our pitcher we ended up having to pull him due to arm pain. So I had to contemplate who to bring in and ended up deciding to bring in seventh-grader Eli Kristensen.

 

“This probably being one of the most stressful opportunities he has had, but boy did he amaze us all. Calm, cool and collected he was able to induce a weak pop fly in short right field then struck out the next guy to keep the game tied. How huge is that for such a young talented kid.”

 

Kristensen closed out the game, getting a strikeout while allowing one walk and no hits.

 

The winning rally in the bottom of the sixth started when Jake Newberry reached on a dropped third strike. And went to second on an error.

 

Cam Miller sacrificed Newberry into scoring position, and Rotter’s bunt brought him home.

 

With two out, Everett Bayliss walked, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball, and Mason Canata worked a walk to put runners at the corners. Tommy Art then singled to right, bringing in both runners to make it 11-8.

 

Art went 2-for-5 in the game with four RBIs. Newberry was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, and Jameson Bayliss drove in three runs.

 

Mount Greylock (5-7) goes to Monument Mountain on Tuesday.
