PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Hoosac Valley baseball team matched Taconic in the hitting department on Friday, but the Braves came through with big hits when it mattered most, propelling them to a 9-3 win at home and handing the Hurricanes its first loss of the season.

Hoosac (4-1) started the game off well, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning thanks to a two-run single by sophomore Matt Braman. Taconic (3-2) tied the game with two runs off of 'Canes starter Zach Brassard in the bottom half of the frame and broke the game open by scoring four times in the third. Luke Toomey started things off with a leadoff triple in the third before Alex Carusotto followed with a double to get the Braves rolling.

Brassard lasted just two innings, allowing four earned runs to take the loss. Overall, Taconic pounded out six extra-base hits against four Hoosac pitchers on the day. Toomey finished with a triple and a double, while Carusotto collected a pair of doubles.

After giving up three early runs, Braves' starter Kyle Card found his groove and pitched well enough to earn his first varsity win. He struck out five batters and walked two before turning the ball over to Peter Gregory with two outs left in the sixth. Gregory stuck out four of the final five batters he faced to seal the win for the hosts.

Senior Adam Mazzantini led the way for the Hoosac offense, going 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Senior catcher Connor Tworig also had a solid day for the 'Canes, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double in the third inning. Senior Zach Lancia also came through with a pair of hits, raising his season average to .529 in the process.
