Athlete Of The Week: Mike Chappell
McCann's Mike Chappell helped his team to a 2-1 week and a spot in the Division 3 Western Mass. tournament.
Chappell threw a complete game, carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning to lead McCann to a 2-1 win over Gateway. The senior hurler allowed one run on three hits, striking out nine and walking four to improve his record to 4-4 this year. After losing three one-run games earlier in the season, Chappell came through in a tight game when his team needed him the most.
Chappell closed out the week by going 1 for 3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored, as the Hornets earned their 10th win of the year with a 15-0 mercy-rule win over Westfield Voc.
While Chappell's record of 4-4 doesn't look so clean, it came down to a lot of unlucky breaks. Chappell finished the year with a prestine 1.14 ERA in 66 and two-thirds innings pitched, while striking out a whopping 103 batters and walking just 28. Chappell was also a beast with the bat for the Hornets as he finished the regular season with the most hits (26), highest batting average (.347), and tied for most RBIs (15).
