Hornets' Bats Explode Again Against Smith
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. — It's safe to say the McCann Tech baseball team is locked in right now.The Hornets' offense completed its second straight double-digit win on Thursday, pounding 18 hits on its way to a 19-3 road win over Smith Vocational. This came one day after McCann defeated Pioneer Valley Christian 17-2, giving Pat Ryan's team 36 hits and 36 runs in a two-day span.
More importantly, the Hornets raised their record to 8-8 this year, leaving them two wins shy of qualifying for the Division 3 Western Mass. tournament. Freshman Sean Davis gave McCann a quality start on a day when he didn't need to do to much to even his record up at 2-2 for the year. Davis struck out 10 batters and walked four, allowing two earned runs on five hits in a complete-game effort.
Davis also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple and three runs scored. He was just one of several Hornets' players to take advantage of Vikings' starter Nick Nye, who gave up 15 runs overall and left the game after an eight-run fifth inning. Seniors Nate Gutmann, Steve Barbeau and Mike Chappell each collected three hits and two RBIs in the game for McCann, which next plays at Granby at 4 p.m. on Friday.
