Strong Start Helps Blue Devils to First Win
LEE, Mass. -- The offense of the Drury baseball team came to play on Tuesday, giving starter Max Quinn all the support he would need in order for the Blue Devils to earn an 11-4 victory over Lee on the road.Drury (1-2) busted out for 16 hits on the day, led by senior leadoff hitter Peter Dassatti, who went 4 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Junior Robert Jutras also had a good day, going 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBI, while senior Tyler Benoit also knocked in a pair of runs by blasting his first long ball of the season.
Quinn picked up the first Blue Devils win of the season by allowing just one unearned run over four innings of work. He struck out five batters and walked just one in his first start of the season. Junior Joel Giorgi gave up two unearned runs in two innings of relief before sophomore Alex Bush closed out the game by pitching the seventh inning. Bush struck out two batters in the final inning, but his defense gave up a run with one of their six errors on the day.
Al Marceau's club took a commanding lead with a six-run second inning and later padded the margin by scoring three more runs in the top of the fifth. The Wildcats finished with just five hits in the game, scoring all three of their runs on Drury miscues.
"We played well early," Marceau said. "We did some nice things with the bats, but got too complacent late in the game. It was nice to get our first win and also find some bats to protect Benoit in the middle of our lineup. Dassatti did a great job leading off, and Quinn pitched well and also showed he can handle the clean-up spot. Jutras has been our most consistent hitter thus far and showed some pop today."
The Blue Devils next play at Pittsfield at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday.
