Mount Greylock Wrestlers Wrap Up County Title
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Hunter Abriel on Wednesday got a takedown late in the third period to win his heavyweight match and secure a Berkshire County Championship for the Mount Greylock wrestling team.
Abriel's victory in the final match of the evening gave the Mounties a 34-33 win over Monument Mountain.
Abriel was behind, 2-1, in the final minute of his match when he went ahead with the takedown on the way to a 4-3 win, Mount Greylock coach Ray Miro said.
"It was exciting for the kids," Miro said. "There were some big wins for us."
Mount Greylock got pins from Jude Rorke (120 pounds), Travis Hilchey (138), Cayman Mead (145) and Devin Pelletier (152). Mead was tied, 0-0, in the third when he earned the pin, Miro said.
Miro used the victory as a reminder to his relatively young team not to take anything for granted.
"Monument Mountain was favored this year," he said. "They had a lot of seniors. We'll be in that position next year. From our starting lineup, we only lose [senior] Travis Hilchey and Roy Malone, who is going to Buxton.
"There's no guarantees, though. You have to do the work in the off-season."
Mount Greylock, which finished its count dual meet season without a loss, heads into the post-season now with the state duals this weekend and the Western Mass individuals in the Mountie Dome Feb. 13 and 14.
