SOUTH DEERFIELD, Mass. -- The No.5 seeded Mount Greylock Mounties (13-6) fell to the No. 1 seeded Frontier Red Hawks (18-1) in straight sets Wednesday evening at Frontier High School.

The Red Hawks advanced to the finals of the Division 3 Western Massachusetts tournament for the 11th year in a row.

“We knew we were the underdogs,” Mount Greylock coach John Albano said. “We had some good moments, and that’s what we’re going to take away. It’s exciting just to come to this court and play against the best.”

Frontier took a quick 6-0 lead in the start of the first set. Mount Greylock’s Hailey Guest and Jenna Benzinger had some good blocks, turning the serve over to the Mounties and earning some points, but Frontier quickly took it away after Mount Greylock called a time-out, down 19-6. The Red Hawks went on to win, 25-10.

Mount Greylock went down 8-4 in the second set after struggling off of Frontier’s serves. Rachel Cialek tallied a couple of aces in the second, contributing to the Frontier lead. The Mounties called a time-out down 16-7, but they did not give up. They came back out and earned a few more points; Serena Chow with a kill put the score at 21-11, but Frontier ended up winning the set, 25-11.

“We were just trying to have fun going into the third set,” Albano said. “We got our seniors in there and got them some playing time.”

Frontier ran up a quick lead in the third set; the Mounties responded adding some points on the board, but the Red Hawks took it 25-9.

Frontier will now face Athol Saturday afternoon for the Division 3 Western Mass finals.
