Mount Greylock Boys Poised to Win Western Mass Crown
BUCKLAND, Mass. – With one event left to be decided, the Mount Greylock boys track and field team has a three-point lead at the Western Massachusetts Division 2 Championships.
Second-place Pittsfield looks to pick up some ground when the meet concludes on Monday, but it may not be enough.
The one event not to be completed at Saturday’s regional meet was the discus – on the boys and girls side.
For the boys, that means Pittsfield’s Kieran Coscia, who won the event last week at the Berkshire County Individuals with a throw of 148 feet, 1 inch, is yet to finish his throws at the Western Mass meet.
The reason is that the discus area at Mohawk Trail Regional High School, site of Saturday’s meet, was too short for the best throwers, like Coscia, requiring the event to be completed on Monday at an alternate location.
If he wins the event – as he has done all spring – Coscia would give the Generals 10 team points, but that may not be enough to slide ahead of Mount Greylock. Eamon Hetherington and Ryan Goss had the two best throws in Saturday’s competition, putting down marks of 144-5 and 126, respectively. If those hold up for at least second and third, the pair would give the Mounties eight points and six points, respectively.
Mount Greylock’s boys Saturday built their narrow lead with their strength in the throws and the relays.
Mount Greylock got a second-place finish from Judge Martin in the shot put and a third-place from Cameron Turner in the javelin. On the track, Mount Greylock’s boys placed second in the 4-by-400 relay and the 4-by-800 relay.
Berkshire County’s boys overall had a great day in the relays.
Lenox’s boys won the 4-by-800, and Monument Mountain was first in the mile relay. The Spartans were third in the 4-by-100, and Pittsfield was third in the 4-by-400, meaning county squads took six of the top nine places in the three relay events.
Individual titles on the boys side went to Mount Greylock’s Quinn McDermott in the 800, Lenox’s Harry Touloukian in the mile, Lenox’s Maxwell Adam in the 2-mile and Pittsfield’s Coscia in the shot put.
The top team point-getter in the girls meet from Berkshire County on Saturday was Lenox, which finished “Day 1” of the meet in second with 69 points, behind likely team champion Frontier (81.5).
The Millionaires got individual wins from Alice Culver in the mile, Grace Elliot in the 2-mile and Solia Schmid in the long jump, where she outdistanced county rivals Dezerea Powell (Pittsfield) in second and Olivia Gamberoni (Wahconah) in third.
Leox also got a win from its 4-by-800 relay quartet, one of two relay wins by Berkshire County girls on Saturday. Wahconah’s girls sprinted to victory in the 4-by-100 relay.
Aryianna Garceau ran a leg on that winning relay and earned a first-place finish in the 100 meters as an individual to help Wahconah place fourth out of 21 girls teams scoring points at the meet.
Lilly Boudreau had a strong day for Hoosac Valley, placing first in the 400 hurdles and second in the 400 to lead the Hurricanes to a seventh-place team finish.
An earlier version of this story did not reflect the fact that the discus competition was still pending.
The meet concluded on Monday.
