Mount Everett Icers Fall to Greenfield

SHEFFIELD, Mass. -- Less than a minute after the Mount Everett hockey team scored to make it a one-goal game, Greenfield scored twice to put the game away.

 

Ethan Laflour and Cassidy Wozniak scored 34 seconds apart late in the second period to give the Green Wave a three-goal lead that stood up for a 4-1 win at the Berkshire School.

 

Just 17 seconds before that onslaught, Max Joyner scored off a cross from Brendan Dempsey as a Mount Everett power play expired.

 

“I thought we did a good job on the power play to move the puck,” Eagles coach Aidan Gilligan said. “And Max did a great job joining the play and sliding down on the back side from the defense and finishing it, which is a wonderful play.

 

“And then we gave it right back on the next two. We got a little lazy and got away from the fundamentals of hockey. We just couldn’t get it done tonight.”

 

Greenfield (4-0) opened the scoring with a breakaway goal by Doug Hanioski, who took a pass through the neutral zone and raced in ahead of two Mount Everett defenders before beating Jack Seward-Dailey (23 saves).

 

Midway through the third, Greenfield doubled its lead when Sean O’Sullivan converted a chance from the top of the right wing faceoff circle.

 

The Eagles, who spent 10 minutes on the man advantage, got their only goal as a Greenfield skater was leaving the penalty box. Caleb Kollmer dropped a pass down low to Dempsey on the left wing. Dempsey carried it to the net, drawing the defense, before sliding a crossing pass for Joyner, who lit the lamp.

 

That was all the damage Mount Everett (1-3) could do against Greenfield goalie Riley Droun, who finished with 14 saves -- eight in the second period.

 

“Their goalie had a phenomenal game tonight,” Gilligan said. “I thought he made a couple of great saves. He did a good job on a couple of 2-on-1s we had and even on a breakaway, he made an outstanding save.

 

“I tip my cap to him. He played great tonight.”
