Volleyball Squads Look Ahead to Tournament
The Lee High volleyball team earned the second seed in the Western Massachusetts Division 3 tournament.
The Wildcats (17-2) await the winner of Thursday's first-round match between No. 7 Athol (12-7) and NO. 10 Mount Everett (10-8).
If Athol survives against the Eagles, it will set up a rematch of last year's sectional semifinal, which Athol won at home, bouncing Lee, 3-0.
Speaking of rematches, last fall, the other D3 semi featured Mount Greylock visiting Turners Falls, where the Mounties bowed by a 3-0 score.
On Monday, third-seeded Mount Greylock (15-4) hosts Turners (12-6) in the quarters.
If the Mounties and Wildcats both advance, they will meet in the semis for their third match of the season. Lee won the first two to take the Berkshire County title.
On the other side of the D3 bracket, top-seeded and defending champion Frontier (17-3) is the team to beat. No. 5 Wahconah (14-4) is one of the team gunning for the Red Hawks.
But first, Wahconah has to deal with No. 4 Ware (18-1) in the quarterfinals. That match will be Sunday evening in Ware.
In Division 2, No. 11 Pittsfield (9-9) and No. 12 Taconic (7-11) are on opposite sides of the bracket.
The Generals open the post-season on Thursday at NO. 6 Amherst (11-7). Taconic heads to No. 5 Chicopee (14-4) in the first round.
