Leamon's Two Goals Lifts Mounties to Victory
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Mount Greylock girls' soccer team picked up a key victory over a North Division team on Tuesday, using a pair of second-half goals from junior Sophie Leamon to earn a 2-0 home win over Monument Mountain. After a scoreless first half, Leamon got the Mounties (6-3-3) on the board in the 53rd minute by finishing off a corner kick from senior Alexandra DeVeaux. Leamon struck again eight minutes later, this time taking a pass from sophomore Kelsey Orpin at the top of the box and scoring with a shot inside the far post. Senior goalie Margot Besnard did the rest for Greylock, finishing with six saves to earn her fifth shutout of the year.
"This was our best game of the season, both offensively and defensively," Mounties head coach Tom Ostheimer said. "We took advantage of scoring opportunities, and Margot and the defense shut down their offense. Melissa [Swann] did a fantastic job defensively on their best midfielder."
Iolani DeRis made nine stops in goal for the Spartans, who fell to 4-7 with the loss. Greylock next plays at Hoosac Valley in a key South Division matchup at 4 p.m. on Friday.
