Mount Everett Girls Battle St. Mary's to a Draw

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Makayla Carpenter scored on a direct free kick in the 79th minute Wednesday to give the Mount Everett girls soccer team a 1-1 tie at St. Mary’s.

 

“Down one with three minutes left, I called a timeout and challenged them to find a way,” Mount Everett coach Joshua King said. “Makayla did just that on a free kick right over the goalie’s hands from outside the 18. I was glad to see them step up to the challenge and now all we do is wait on [Western Massachusetts tournament] seeding Friday.”

 

After a first half where the Eagles were not able to put much pressure on the Saints in the final third, Mount Everett started generating more scoring chances in the second half, King said.

 

St. Mary’s got a goal in transition from Morgan Lecrenski midway through the half.

 

“We refocused at half and challenged the girls to be more aggressive and take those shots when available,” King said. They did a great job of listening and started applying continuous pressure in the second half, missing some key shots.”

 

Kamari Pridgen made six saves for the Eagles, who outshot St. Mary’s, 11-7.

 

Mount Everett started the day as the No. 8 seed in Class D in Western Mass. If that seed holds, it will face top-seeded Granby on the road in the quarter-final round.
