Hornets Hit Rough Patch in Loss to St. Joe's
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The McCann Tech soccer team started strong and ended fine, but it was a rough patch in between for the Hornets that cost them a 6-2 loss to St. Joe's at home on Wednesday.Junior striker Mary Nguyen gave McCann (2-1) a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute of the game, but the Crusaders answered back quickly with strikes from Bailey Vinette and Emylee Carnevale. Mike Dowling's club hung in tough with St. Joe's until late in the first half, when a poor stretch of defense led to two goals in only 27 seconds. Vinette and Keegan McCauley both scored to give the visitors a 4-1 halftime lead.
Things went from bad to worse for the Hornets after the break, when McCauley and Carnevale added two more goals in the first seven minutes of the second half to open a 6-1 advantage. Nguyen closed out the scoring by finishing off a pass from classmate Katie Hancock for her second goal of the game and team-leading sixth of the season in the 51st minute of play.
Sophomore Carrie Pierce and Brittany Smith made some nice plays for the McCann defense in the game, while senior goalkeeper Becky Daniels stopped nine of the 18 shots she faced.
The Hornets play their fourth game this week when they travel to Sci-Tech for a 4 p.m. match on Friday.
