St. Joe's Shuts Down McCann in Hornets' First Loss
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — There's been plenty for the McCann Tech girls' soccer team to feel good about this season. Monday's game against Saint Joseph's wasn't one of those moments, however, as the Crusaders scored two goals in each half to earn a 4-0 home win over the Hornets, giving McCann its first loss of the 2012 season. After outscoring its opponents 33-6 over the first seven games, the Hornets' offense finally hit a wall against St. Joe's goalie Kendall Smith. The Crusaders' keeper finished with four saves to earn the shutout, keeping the always potent Mary Nguyen out of the back of the net. Keegan McCauley, meanwhile, had a solid day on the offensive end for St. Joe's, scoring a pair of goals and assisting on another. She first finished off a pass from Emma Peplowski in the 25th minute and later finished off her team's scoring with an unassisted tally with 10 minutes left in the game.
In between, the Crusaders (4-3) received goals from Reagan Smith and Emylee Carnevale. The game was closer than the score indicated, as McCann (7-1) was outshot 10-8 and was even with St. Joe's with three corner kicks apiece.
Junior Alex Wood stopped five shots in goal for the Hornets, who next play at Franklin Tech at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
