Ghidotti's Goal Pushes Drury Past Lee
LEE, Mass. — The Drury girls' soccer team needed a game like Monday's 1-0 road win over Lee.Despite some good moments over the first seven games, the Blue Devils have been unable to put it all together, struggling to score against quality competition on its way to a 1-5-1 start to the season. Molly Meczywor's squad showed some tenacity against the Wildcats on Monday, however, getting a goal from junior Cori Ghidotti in the first half and relying on a season-high 17 saves from senior keeper Ali Tatro to preserve its second win of the year.
"After moving some people around, we found more scoring opportunities this game," Meczywor said. "In addition, Ali came up with some huge saves and was very active in the 18-yard box. Her defensive efforts, along with her communication and aggressiveness, were outstanding."
Thanks to Tatro's effort between the pipes, Drury was able to withstand a penalty kick and two direct kicks that hit off the posts. Ghidotti added the only scoring the Blue Devils would need in the 29th minute, taking a cross from senior Danielle Racette and placing a shot to the left of Wildcats' goalie Sara Middleton (13 saves). It was Ghidotti's team-leading seventh goal of the year and first assist for Racette, who spends a majority of her time back at sweeper.
"The goal began on our defensive end with Alison Tassone winning a 50/50 ball and making a beautiful pass to Danielle. It was a great play. Alison continues to be an unsung hero, playing very well on the outside halfback.
"It was a good win and, hopefully, it will propel us this week."
Drury returns to action on Tuesday with a home game against Monument Mountain at 4:15 p.m. Lee (5-4-1) also plays on Tuesday, hosting Pittsfield at 4 p.m.
