Mounties Strike Early in Win over St. Joe's

 

Sophomore Grant Raphael wasted little time, scoring the first of his two goals on the day just one minute in off of a pass from Nathan Majumder. The senior captain then set up his team's second strike seven minutes later, allowing sophomore Eric Hirsch to score his second goal of the year. Majumder made it a 3-0 game in the 15th minute by finishing off a pass from freshman Benni McComish, who also had a goal of his own and assisted on another Majumder tally in the first 10 minutes of the second half. 

Like his team, which has won its first three games without allowing a goal, Majumder is off to a fast start this year, recording four goals and five assists in his first three outings.

"We were able to get out of the gates quickly, and they were on their heals after that," Greylock head coach Blair Dils said. "We combined well today and finished better than we did on Tuesday. Their two strikers were dangerous when they had space to operate. Our backline did a good job of separating them from the ball, however, and limiting their scoring opportunities."

The Mounties (3-0) held a 23-3 edge in shots and a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks. The Greylock defense was solid again, giving senior goalie Sean Houston (one save) little to work with. Houston played the first half before giving way to freshman Cal Filson, who made two saves in his varsity debut working the pipes in the second half. Junior defender Nick Bolognia also got his first varsity goal in the win, scoring unassited in the 63rd minute. 

The Mounties next face a tough North Division challenge with a road game against Monument Mountain on Tuesday night. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.

"We're a little banged up right now, which is not how we want to be going into the Monument game," Dils said. "That will be a playoff-like game very early in the season, and we're excited for the challenge."
